Why PoE?
Power-over-Ethernet is a means by which a device can derive electrical power other than from a battery or an electrical outlet. The power is literally transmitted over unused lines of the Ethernet cable, used for the wired network connection, by installing power injectors at the network switch. In fact, some switches are available with PoE built-in. Ethernet cabling is considered “low voltage” and does not need to be installed by a licensed electrician or enclosed in metal conduit, nor is it terminated in an unsightly outlet box.
Using PoE gives the user the flexibility to place the device anywhere an Ethernet cable can be pulled, without having to install a power outlet.
